*An unstretched painting is work created on canvas or linen that has not been mounted onto a wooden frame or stretcher bars. I work primarily on unstretched canvas attached to a wall in my studio to paint, because it feels less constrained, allowing me to experiment with scale, texture, and gesture without the limits imposed by a pre-stretched frame. I especially prefer to do this when creating multiple smaller pieces at a time, often sharing the same palette. A benefit of unstretched work is that it can be displayed in various ways: pinned or taped to a wall for a raw, modern look, mounted onto stretcher bars later (your local frame shop can do this for you!), or even framed behind glass.
